The Gentle Art of Knitting

June 12, 2011

It was a lovely day in Mrs Moon yesterday!   Jane arrived with lots of samples from her gorgeous book which look even better in the flesh than they do in print.  We were joined by lots of Jane's friends and fans and had a super time eating cakes and generally chatting about knitty things.

It was lovely to meet so many new people - we hope that you will visit us again - as well as all our regulars, who just made the day so jolly!  Not much Prosecco was drunk, but I'm sure we'll manage it somehow.

Special thanks to Clare Kelly for taking some fabulous photos - we will try to post some here soon (I've left my camera at the shop...) ... and of course to Jane Brocket for taking the time out with her family to show us why we love her work so much...

Never too late

February 15, 2011

Gosh, sorry it has been so long since I've been here...  I really don't know why I haven't managed to keep the blog up to date but my new New Year's Resolution is to do better!

I think some of the reason why I've not written anything is that there is too much to write!  We have been so busy at Mrs Moon... what with appearing on the telly, in The Evening Standard, Home & Gardens etc etc we've hardly had time to think!

We've been thrilled to have lots of new people coming along to our knit-ins on Thursdays at 10.30am (ish).  In particular, we welcome people who make cakes!  There has been a bit of a cake war recently and this is something that Susan and I positively encourage!  It means I have something for lunch if it doesn't all go which is particularly good as at the moment I seem to be eating the same sandwich (emmenthal cheese and ham if you're interested) every single day and it gets a bit boring!

Last week Emily and Susan (not that one) both served up something completely delicious, but Emily went for it, by bringing in TWO cakes one of which was in the shape of a horse... now that really is raising the barre!  Can't wait till tomorrow.

To be honest though, we've needed cake since lovely Robyn headed off back to Adelaide in December.  Things are much quieter without her, but eating is getting us through...

Ally Pally et al

October 18, 2010

We tried to take a little bit of St Margarets to Ally Pally last week and hopefully it worked.  The Knitting & Stitching show was something new for us and we were a bit nervous about it, but we had great fun and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves (most of the time)!

Tim took Susan and I up on Wednesday for set up - it took us much longer than we'd hoped and Tim had to get back to Twickenham for school pick up so Susan and I were alone lugging stuff around for most of the afternoon.   The only thing we had forgotten was white tablecloths and it turns out that no one sells them in Wood Green.. .we should have gone with the intial thought of heading back along the north circular to John Lewis at Brent Cross, but instead, Tim had a great tour of all the chains in Wood Green High Street...  Argos came up trumps in the end!

Despite a few technical hitches trying to get the shelving up and having a fight with the clothes rail, everything was just about there by the time we hit the Piccadilly line at 7pm - just enough stuff left to do for Kate to feel useful in the morning!

Up early on Thursday and this time Kate was our chauffeur.  Her buttons were a really bit hit at the show which was brilliant.  We introduced loads of people to blue Sky Alpacas and Spud & Chloe and the discerning buyers also loved fyberspates and Malabrigo.

We had visits from Jane Brockett, Debbie Bliss, Erika Knight, Claire Montgomerie, Kate Haxell and lots of other lovely people.  Special mention has to go to Fiona who brought us tea in our hour of need.

Saturday was bonkers and really great fun - we were totally exhausted - I could hardly concentrate of Strictly Come Dancing, it was that bad.

All in all a success and we've booked again for next year so will be ready next time... hope to see you there.

Ysolda at Mrs Moon

July 27, 2010

The thing about setting up a shop and a website when you've got four young children each is the summer holidays are a bit tricky...  something has to give and this summer it's the shop.  Luckily the Lovely Lydia & Lynne are holding the fort extremely capably, but we do miss seeing everyone...

Anyway, I just popped in this evening to get my fix and who should be there but Ysolda and Sarah.  I was feeling a bit spacey, but managed to put names to faces and was just so pleased that I had popped in when I had!

They were on their way to Knit Nation so hopefully we'll see them there, but thrilled that they dropped in...

Don't forget we're closed from August 16th to 31st, but you can still buy online....

World Wide Wool

June 19, 2010

It's been a long slog, but at last our new site is up and running!  We've been working for weeks trying to get everything that is in the shop on the site and hopefully you'll think that we have done a good job.

Our aim from the start has been to make a visit to the site just like a visit to the shop, so you'll find lots of our recommendations dotted around and more to come as we are adding things each day.

We have also made it easy to buy all the yarn and needles that you need with individual patterns in just one click - we've added our favourite needles or those we think are the best for the job, but you can easily substitute your own favourite if you want to.  This feature will be available on our best-selling pattern books soon, so watch this space.

We are so thrilled that the site is done and want to thank in particular Sophie, The Gingerbread Lady http://www.gingerbread-lady.co.uk/ , for the beautiful design and Matthew and everyone at Infomagnet http://infomagnet.com/ for pulling it all together on the technical side.... they have been brilliant to work with and understood our wooliness from the start!

Have a browse around and let us know what you think....

We're not just good for yarn

March 16, 2010

Wow, what a couple of weeks! We've been completely overwhelmed by all the good wishes from our lovely new customers. Thank you so much to everyone who has come in (some of you many times) and spent some time with us.

We have lots of new things in stock. Brittany needles have come in and virtually gone again - they've been so popular with SW London knitters. I wanted to let you know about some of the other things that we have in stock ... we're not just for knitters.

We've loads of haberdashery including beautiful VV Rouleaux ribbons - from classic satins and velvets to giant bobbles and wired organza. Clothkits have brought squeals of delight from those who remember wearing them as well as those who remember making them and there is a wholenew generation out there about to get kitted up in their designs.

Clothkits also have some Liberty print bias binding that has been a real favourite as well as giant ric rac... what couldn't be improved by giant ric rac?

Kid's gifts from Buttonbag and Blueberry Park are very popular and we're in the process of putting together Mrs Moon kid's kits for inspired Christmas presents. Also Mrs Moon kid's kits for inspired Christmas presents. Also for smaller kids (well, babies) we've got lots of Anne-Claire Petit toys and have treated ourselves to the rather luxurious crocheted Bird Cage... see our window....

We had a lovely visit from Jane Brocket yesterday. We love her books and blog and hope that she liked our little bit of St Margarets heaven.http://yarnstorm.blogs.com/jane_brocket

busy busy busy

March 14, 2010

We've been busy busy busy over the last few weeks so apologies for the silence... Our online shop is nearly ready to go live so we've got a few hectic weeks ahead trying to upload all our stock so that we can start to ship around the country and world...! Lots of lovely new things have appeared with new shades in Spud & Chloe and Blue Sky, Louisa Harding's gorgeous Mulberry silk and latest Chinoiserie patterns, sock yarns, kits and loads more besides. Do pop by if you haven't been in for a while .. if you get in quick you might manage to get your hands on some lovely knitted bunnies and chicks with cream eggs inside that have been knitted for the Shooting Star Hospice in Hampton... we're on our second batch so hurry if you want to get some. We've got lots of new classes planned and up and running. Lovely Lydia is braving the world of teaching children and has designed some beautiful felt bunnies, chickens, cats and spiders (?!) for kids classes on Saturday 20th March and Saturday 3rd April... more to follow.. great for children's parties...! We've also got lots of beginners knitting and crochet classes in the coming weeks plus sock knitting courses, and workshops in colourwork, lace and cable knitting. Dates of classes are available in the shop or email [email protected] and we'll be happy to let you know what's going on when.

In the pink

February 05, 2010

We thought we ought to do a Valentine's window and had a great time! I was shocked how many pinks we have and it made me realise how much yarn there is at 41 Crown Road....! I guess that whatever yarn we stock, there tends to be a version in pink and red and as long as there is then we are bound to stock it... we're just drawn towards those rosey hues. Kate, Susan and lovely Lydia have made some beautiful hearts for the window and if you look carefully you'll see some of Kate's ceramic hearts... look out for her ceramic buttons in the shop soon. This keeping-the-window-up-to-date thing is going to keep us on our toes.... we're having to think of Easter already which is most unlike us... we're more last-minute-dash-to-get-the-easter-eggs kinda gals, so it should be good for life in general. Wondering how well we're going to do with the Easter tones... somehow I can't believe we have this much yellow... but who knows.... We've got new things coming in every day - a selection of fyberspates sock and lace yarn to see what you all like arrived on Wednesday... it's not going to last long, but we'll be getting more in in the next few weeks...Malabrigo should be here soon........ Hope to see you soon. Karen

Uknited Nations

January 14, 2010

We had a great inaugural knit-in today. Susan provided home made millionaire's shortbread and we had a small but select group of Mrs Moon friends knitting and chatting away... Our group hailed from Australia, USA, Richmond and St Margarets, so very cosmopolitan. Admittedly I don't think they made the trip specially, but it made us feel loved... There were great projects on show.. Fiona and Monica were showing us all how it should be done , Robyn was picking up where she left off years ago and Vanessa managed to finish her second project with real success. All in all a great first knit-in.. thank you to everyone who came... looking forward to many more.

Happy New Year

January 08, 2010

Well, the pom poms have come down from the window, so Christmas must be over. We had a lovely first Christmas and met lots of new people in the shop so we hope you'll all come back and see us again soon. Lots of exciting things coming up which you'll read about in our long-awaited first newsletter, but most importantly, we're going to start opening on Mondays from the 11th January. We hope this makes us more convenient for you and means less wasted journeys. We were really excited to receive delivery of Tante Sophie's beautiful individual patterns yesterday (see www.tantesophie.com). I'm already half way through the Mocha scarf which uses a skein of Blue Sky brushed suri... it's very soft and fluffy!! Just what you need when it's so cold outside. Our programme of lessons is beginning in the next couple of weeks, with Fiona Brooker teaching beginners knitting classes and Lydia Bates teaching creative sewing.... details to follow shortly. Hope you've got enough yarn to knit something snuggly over the weekend... see you soon...
